Celebrating the Summer STRIDE

Posted on

There's nothing like summer at Horizons to help students AND teachers feel ready for the new school year! Students who do not participate in enriching summer activities often experience the 'summer slide' - the accumulated loss of learning during the summer months. At Horizons, we celebrate the summer STRIDE!

Instead of losing academic ground over the summer, Horizons students make incredible progress. Each Horizons student gains an average of 6-10 weeks of grade equivalence in their reading and math skills during the six-week summer session. They build confidence in and out of the classroom through activities like swimming and reading buddies. They form strong relationships with their peers and teachers, supporting each other in a powerful community. With fantastic summer memories and new skills under their belts, Horizons students are ready to take on the school year.

Horizons teachers are ready, too -- after a summer of creative lesson planning, fun-filled classrooms, and community support, educators are feeling refreshed and energized. Horizons teachers dedicate their summers to organizing engaging projects, helping students build social-emotional skills, and spreading the joy of learning to their students and families. We are so grateful for these committed professionals who work tirelessly to ensure young people learn, grow, and thrive during summer and out-of-school time. On behalf of the entire Horizons Network, THANK YOU, teachers!

I love this program. It allows me to be creative and think outside of the box, and make lessons for student fun! It re-energizes my teacher brain before getting back to the school year.
