First Lady Dr. Jill Biden Visits Horizons!

Horizons was honored to host First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and Education Secretary Dr. Miguel Cardona for a visit to Horizons at Albertus Magnus College in CT and Horizons Atlanta at the University of Georgia in GA!
On Wednesday, July 21, Drs. Biden and Cardona, along with Ned Lamont, Governor of Connecticut, and Justin Elicker, Mayor of New Haven, joined students, teachers, and parents from Horizons at Albertus Magnus College (AMC) and Horizons at The Foote School for the first stop on their Summer Learning Tour: a showcase of summer learning and its critical role in pandemic recovery.
During the Horizons at AMC visit, second grade Horizons students read Jarbari Jumps to VIP guests and participated in a conversation about the book, learning to swim and doing your best. The First Lady and Secretary Cardona, along with other VIPs, also participated in a STEM Lego activity with first graders, where students and guests worked together to build the robot “Mr. Learnie.”
Horizons at Albertus Magnus College was made possible by state and federal funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), and launched to support students through the education crisis created as a result of COVID-19. The site will now grow by one grade level per year, serving students in perpetuity from kindergarten through high school.
The Summer Learning Tour continued on Thursday, July 22 with a visit to Horizons Atlanta at the University of Georgia! Drs. Biden and Cardona joined students at the pool to watch a swimming lesson, and spoke with students, parents, and teachers about the need for more summer learning programs like Horizons that help students academically, and also socially, emotionally, and mentally.
“The bottom line — at least for me as an educator — the one thing I try to give the students is confidence,” Dr. Biden said to parents, referencing her continued career teaching English at a community college. “I think that’s exactly what Horizons does.”
