A new short (4 minute) video, produced by NationSwell, takes a look at what's at the core of every Horizons program: excellent teachers. Each Horizons classroom is led by a professional teacher, with public and private educators working together to provide a low student-to-teacher ratio of 5:1.
Horizons offers a different style of teaching, for teachers and students alike. Compared to the test-based learning that may dominate the regular school year, at Horizons, learning is project-based. Horizons students take the lead in choosing particular areas of interest, and teachers model activities and projects around the needs of their students. Best of all, the 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio allows space for these professionals to focus on their most important task: instilling a love of learning in their students.
“Our Horizons students are very appreciative,” says Palesa Beckles, a teacher, in the video. “You see that sparkle in their eyes, and they think it’s all just fun and excitement but, in all of that, they’re learning – and not realizing that they’re learning and mastering those skills that they need.”
