Horizons at The Ethel Walker School is an award-winning program that helps build brighter futures for underserved children in Hartford, CT.  Modeled after the national Horizons Student Enrichment Program, Horizons’ intensive six-week summer program is designed to prevent summer decline in academic performance and close the opportunity and achievement gaps.  The program begins in prekindergarten and serves its students throughout their educational careers, helping them build skills and self-confidence and realize their full potential through a unique blend of academic and cultural and recreational enrichment activities. Additionally, Horizons provides direct and individualized academic support to its students throughout the year. Working in partnership with Horizons families, sending schools in Hartford, and the host school, Horizons at The Ethel Walker School is committed to developing the whole child and offers activities that promote higher-level thinking and perspective, leadership development and boost self-efficacy – all while raising student aspirations and expectations for their lives.

Horizons at The Ethel Walker School currently serves approximately 100 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade and will continue to grow through the development of eighth grade, reaching a full enrollment of 143 students.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director will report directly to the Executive Director, and will help lead Horizons’ continued growth and success through effective partnership with a variety of stakeholders, including Horizons students and families, staff, Board, and donors; The Ethel Walker School’s administrative leadership and broader community; Hartford Public Schools; and Horizons National. S/he oversees many aspects of Horizons’ activities and operations, including: ensuring the quality of all programming; hiring and supervising an excellent team of staff; assisting in the management of a growing annual budget, currently $300,000, with a projected growth of $750,000 at its full maturity; and broadening Horizons’ base of support through effective fundraising and marketing initiatives. Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Assist in leadership and direction for the Horizons program at The Ethel Walker School
  • Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization
  • Oversee all student recruitment and retention activities related to both summer and academic year programming, interacting with school principals, teachers, guidance counselors, and parents as necessary
  • Assist in leading ongoing development and implementation of Horizons’ Pre-K through Eighth Grade program
  • Lead all aspects of the summer program, including: Recruiting and supervising teachers, teaching interns, and enrichment instructors, working across this team to oversee curriculum development, goals, and daily schedules
  • Oversee the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Planning off-campus trips and on-campus enrichment programming
  • Coordinating with The Ethel Walker School administration for use of pool and other facilities
  • Managing contracts and coordination with food and transportation service providers
  • Ensuring compliance with all state licensing requirements
  • Manage the academic-year tutoring program


 Organizational Leadership

  • Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization
  • Partner with the Horizons Board, providing leadership and support to members and Committees (Program, Finance, Development & Event)
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring the program’s annual budget, working with The Ethel Walker School Business Office as needed
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of all evaluation information necessary for internal and national reports
  • Serve as liaison between Horizons at The Ethel Walker School, Horizons National, and other Horizons affiliates to identify and replicate best practices


Development and Marketing

  • Serve as the face of Horizons, stewarding relationships with donors and participating in networking and speaking opportunities in order to raise awareness of Horizons throughout Greater Hartford
  • Lead ongoing work to identify and cultivate new sources of funding, including grant writing and reporting
  • Collaborate with the Board on fundraising strategy and provide support for fundraising events
  • Ensure effective gift recording and acknowledgement, working with The Ethel Walker School Development Office as needed
  • Coordinate all public relations activities and materials in order to strengthen relationships with The Ethel Walker School and the broader Greater Hartford community



  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in non-profit or public health field.
  • Demonstrated success in leadership roles in a nonprofit setting, preferably in an organization with a focus on education, children, youth, or families
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to build and sustain positive and respectful relationships, with a strong sense of cultural competency and experience with working with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Passionate commitment to ensuring success for all students and closing the achievement and opportunity gaps
  • Track record of success in program administration, including responsibility for budget and staff management
  • Direct experience leading a development function preferred
  • High degree of initiative, with the ability to work independently while maintaining high levels of accountability
