Horizons at Foote seeks a dynamic leader with a strong background in education to direct its programs to advance equity in education for New Haven Public School (NHPS) students. Horizons at Foote advances educational equity through a robust academic and enrichment program that builds on long-term partnerships with families and communities to provide a joyful, safe, and inspiring learning environment that empowers students from New Haven Public Schools to thrive in an ever-changing world.

The Program:

Students in grades K-8 spend six weeks every summer on the campus of The Foote School in New Haven, CT. In small classes led by professional teachers, students dive into a rich curriculum focusing on reading, STEM, and arts. Swimming and other activities expose children to new opportunities.
Students join Horizons the summer after kindergarten and return each year through 8th grade, building lasting relationships with their teachers and peers and developing life skills essential for their future success. In the summer of 2021 our first class of 8th graders went on to high school; we are supporting them as they navigate the next four years.
Horizons at Foote is part of a network of over 70 programs at independent schools and colleges across the country which work under the umbrella of Horizons National.

Program Goals:

  • Promote student learning gains through fun, experiential, and challenging academic skill building taught by experienced teachers.
  • Expose students to enrichment opportunities in art, music, physical education, sports, science and nature, yoga and wellness, and more.
  • Provide students with two nutritious meals and a snack daily.
  • Build lasting connections with children, families, and public schools in the New Haven community.
  • Sustain, build and strengthen partnership with The Foote School.

Primary Functions of the Executive Director:

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall management of the Horizons at Foote Program which includes, without limitation: planning curriculum and learning experiences, recruiting, leading and supervising faculty and staff, fulfilling fundraising goals, working harmoniously with students' families, managing daily operations during the 6-week summer program, developing and sustaining external partnerships, and developing and implementing the strategic plan.

The Executive Director interfaces with a variety of stakeholders and is responsible for maintaining and growing both personal and institutional relationships. To give an example, a list of current stakeholders includes: The Foote School community; New Haven Public Schools; individual, corporate and foundation donors; Yale University; and Albertus Magnus College.

The Executive Director is responsible for supervising one full-time staff member and approximately 45 contractual summer employees while sustaining a part-time year-round program for current K-8 students as well as a high school mentorship program. The Executive Director meets regularly with the Board of Directors and its committees as well as an Advisory Board.

Salary Range: $95,000-$105,000 with generous benefits. This is a full-time, year-round position. Flexible start date.

The Executive Director reports to the Horizons at Foote Board Chair and the Head of The Foote School.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, business, non-profit management, or related field. (Masters' degree in education, business, or nonprofit management preferred.)
  • Experience in teaching and school administration and/or non-profit management with a proven track record.
  • Experience with special events, public relations, and grant writing.
