Horizons at St. Richard's School
Indianapolis, Indiana
St. Richard’s School, located in the urban environment of Indianapolis, Indiana, is a private Episcopal school that utilizes the resources of its urban community to include great ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic diversity within its curriculum. With a student body of 325, an average class size of 16, and a student to teacher ratio of 10 to 1, St. Richard’s is careful to maintain a personal and close learning atmosphere.
Horizons at St. Richards was founded in 1996 with 12 kindergarten students, and has grown to serve students in grades K-8, drawing its students from the surrounding neighborhood. The neighborhood location allows families to walk or drive students to the program, which gives Horizons teachers the opportunity to interact with both families and students on a daily basis, and hence maintaining St. Richard’s intimate environment.
Due to its location in the state’s capital city the Horizons program has access to, and utilizes, the enrichment opportunities available. The Horizons program continues through the year with a program entitled the "Winter Connection" which originated in 2001. This program is held twice a week during the school year and with the aid of students from nearby Butler University and Brebeuf Preparatory High School, focuses on tutoring/homework assistance and cultural enrichment the students. In addition, Horizons students and their families are encouraged to travel around the state of Indiana to visit colleges and universities in an effort to prepare the entire family for the “road to higher education.” These Saturday college tours begin in October and end in May each year.
