Horizons National Staff

Lorna Smith, Chief Executive Officer
In her eight years with Horizons National, Lorna Smith has shepherded the organization from a two-person office to a vital central resource for its twenty affiliates.  In her role as CEO, Ms. Smith leads National expansion efforts, with a goal of adding 25 new Horizons programs by 2016.  She also oversees initiatives that reinforce program quality, and works with each Horizons program to support local growth and innovation. Under her leadership, Horizons National received the National Summer Learning Association’s 2010 Excellence Award, and was selected for the Wallace Foundation's More Time for Learning Professional Learning Community.  Ms. Smith brings market research expertise to the organization’s critical evaluation practices along with a unique combination of entrepreneurial and professional experience.   A graduate of Wellesley College, Ms. Smith holds an MBA from Cornell University.

Kim Fairey, Chief Advancement Officer
Ms. Fairey is responsible for national fundraising and marketing in support of the Horizons affiliate network.  In her three years with Horizons, the national office supported the founding of seven new affiliate sites and funded significant program innovations and affiliate support capacity.  In addition to extensive professional and community fundraising experience, her career includes banking, management, strategic planning, and professional volunteer management.    Her education includes an AB from Wellesley College; an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business; and a Master’s in Divinity from Union Theological Seminary of New York.

Jose Oromi, Chief Program Officer

Leading the affiliate support efforts at Horizons National, Mr. Oromi brings experience in global and domestic operations and programming, having worked with Save the Children and AmeriCorps, in addition to extensive teaching and community support services.  Prior to joining Horizons National, Mr. Oromi was the executive director of a highly successful Horizons Affiliate for five years.  Mr. Oromi holds his B.A. from the University of Florida.
 

Andrew McLaren, Expansion Director

Andrew's role is to organize and lead the expansion efforts for Horizons National and to identify potential new affiliates. His experience as an independent school head for 31 years, and after that as an executive of the New York State Association of Independent Schools for three years, leaves him with extensive and deep connections among heads of independent schools. Mr. McLaren earned his B.A. from Trinity College, Cambridge, UK, and his M.A. from Teachers College.

Phaedrel (Faye) Bowman, Data Analyst and Technology Support
Faye is the Data Analyst and Technology Specialist with Horizons National. She manages the data tools used by Horizons affiliates, including the student database, and is responsible for analyzing and reporting program data. She also provides technical support for the National office.

 

Andrea de Azevedo, Growth & Expansion Manager

Andrea works with the Expansion Team in its efforts to add 25 new Horizons programs by 2016. She prospects on a national level to identify and create relationships with independent school, college and university partners and collaborates with existing affiliates in the expansion of their programs to serve more students.
 

Kelly Mattox, Advancement Associate

Kelly works with the Advancement team to raise awareness and funds for Horizons National.  She oversees donor relations activities and external marketing and communications, including managing the National website and producing marketing and fundraising resources for affiliates.
 

Alena Murphy, Program Director
Alena manages National's ongoing initiatives and ensures that each program is equipped, prepared, and trained for summer assessment implementation. She maintains a library of shared documents and curriculum, and works to establish community within the organization as well as to share our story with the larger, out-of-school learning community via conference calls, website, newsletters and social media.

Elizabeth Reed, Program Manager

Elizabeth provides administrative support to Horizons National affiliates, board members and staff including, communication and office management.  She is a specialist in meeting support, conference and travel planning, human resources and finance.
