National Office
Since its inception as a national organization in 1995, Horizons has grown from one Affiliate serving 200 students to 15 Affiliates serving 1,500 students across nine states. The role of Horizons National is to initiate, support and ensure the quality of Horizons programs throughout the United States. This is achieved through:
- Affiliate Guidance – Serve as “best practices” resource for all aspect of program operations and growth, including long-range strategic planning; establishment of policies and procedures as Affiliates mature; and assurance that programs are implemented at the highest standards
- Teacher Training – Train Executive Directors, educators and aids in Horizons’ experiential teaching methodology
- Affiliate Conferences – Convene bi-annually to report on developments within the field; share best practices across Affiliates; showcase innovative, effective teaching practices; review current evaluation and research data; expand fundraising tactics; create strategies for enhanced board performance, public and private school partnerships and other short- and long-term operational issues
- Evaluation & Research – Conduct quantitative and qualitative evaluation program-wide in conjunction with the Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy at Yale University; analyze and report on findings; develop and analyze reading assessments for students; stay abreast of and disseminate relevant research literature
- Marketing Communications – Provide Affiliate-specific marketing toolkit containing stationery system and design templates for publicity and marketing initiatives; provide centralized voice to promote cohesion of Affiliate programs and national organization; manage website to serve multiple constituents
- Online Curriculum – Provide Affiliates with online database of fully developed, best-of-class lesson plans across curricula
- Fundraising Assistance – Research and pursue opportunities for Affiliate pass-through grants and scholarships
- Private & Public School Development – Identify prospective partnerships; educate school administrators on Horizons’ mission, population target and teaching methodology; cultivate relationships with private and public schools; facilitate all steps necessary to implement a new Affiliate program
- Leadership Development – Assist in identifying and recruiting Executive Directors to launch and run new Affiliates; assist in the development of fully functioning Boards of Directors to guide new programs through inception phase and annual expansion
- Seed Money – Provide fundraising assistance and three years of seed money to help launch new Affiliate programs
Horizons National’s Board of Directors represent a variety of disciplines, including education, business, nonprofit and finance. Dr. Edward Ziegler, founder of Head Start, and Yale University’s Sterling Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Director Emeritus of the Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy, was one of the original members of the National Board and now serves on the Advisory Board. A minimum of five Horizons Affiliates are represented on the National board on a rotating basis. |
