Mission and Goals
Mission Statement
The mission of Horizons National is to initiate, support and ensure the quality of Horizons programs throughout the United States.

Affiliate Program Mission

To provide an academic, cultural, and recreational program designed to encourage a diverse group of students from low-income families to realize their full potential.

Working in partnership with families, Horizons serves students of varying academic abilities throughout their childhood and adolescence.

Horizons is committed to the development of the whole child through experiences that build problem-solving skills, foster awareness of community responsibility, instill respect for oneself and others, and encourage a life-long interest in learning.

Horizons’ Goals
While operating independently under the 501(c)(3) of their host school, each Affiliate shares the following goals defined by the National Board:

  1. Prevent summer decline in students’ school performance
  2. Improve students’ school attendance
  3. Improve children’s social and interpersonal skills
  4. Encourage participation in extra-curricular activities
  5. Raise children’s educational expectations and aspirations
  6. Encourage parents to become involved in their children’s education and activities
  7. Build self-esteem, resourcefulness, and sound judgment

Horizons is a true public/private sector partnership involving multiple constituents: independent host schools, public schools, students and their families, the respective communities of each, educators, financial supporters, and volunteers. As such, Horizons Affiliates adhere to a set of organizational values:

  1. Diversity of staff and students
  2. Program innovation and excellence
  3. A symbiotic, cooperative relationship with the independent host school
  4. Open, collaborative relationships with each student’s public school
  5. A commitment to helping each student realize his/her full potential
  6. A belief that learning occurs over time and is optimized by multiple consecutive years of program participation
