Maret School is an independent, coeducational, K-12, college preparatory day school located in Washington, D.C. and is host to Horizons at Maret, the only Horizons program in the Washington D.C. area. Since the first 16 Horizons students joined the program in 2000, Horizons at Maret has grown by one grade each year and has now reached our planned capacity of 100 students in grades K-6 drawn from H.D. Cooke Elementary School, an inner city, Washington DC public school. The program’s strategic enrollment goal is to continue to grow into a Middle School program.
The Horizons faculty includes
several teachers from Maret School as well as other
neighboring independent schools. A number of Maret
upper school students act as Horizons assistant teachers
("HATS").
The Horizons team of teachers and assistant teachers
engage students in a wide range of creative math,
language arts, music, art, photography, and computer
activities, as well as daily swimming.
In addition, Horizons students take great advantage of cultural and recreational opportunities in the Washington, DC area, visiting the Smithsonian, the National Zoo, the Wolf Trap Performing Arts Center, and other museums and parks in and around the city. Horizons kids learn to ice skate, thanks to an area rink that donates ice time and lessons. The program also offers an enhanced arts program for 6th graders in conjunction with the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture.
Horizons at Maret aims to prevent a summer decline in academic retention, foster a love of learning, bolster academic achievement, and improve school attendance. Preliminary results from a Yale University study of Horizons programs indicate that we are beginning to have an impact: measures of motivation for learning among Horizons students around the country have shown statistically significant improvement.
Horizons at Maret also offers a Saturday Program during the academic year. Three six-week sessions, in the fall, winter and spring, include academic enrichment, reading, computers, sports and exciting field trips. Maret students volunteer as aides for the Saturday Program and continue as mentors to children at our partner school during the school year.
