There are several ways to become involved with Horizons, including:
- Hosting a program
- Teaching
- Administration
- Attending as a student
- Volunteering
- Support at the local or national level
Hosting a Horizons Program
Horizons is a true public/private collaboration. The independent host school contributes use of its campus and facilities while Horizons raises the necessary funds for public school students to attend the program. The relationship established between the independent school and Horizons is symbiotic, benefiting both organizations by:
- Providing an environment for learning not otherwise accessible to children living in low income families
- Extending the reputation of the host school locally and nationally
- Providing community service opportunities for students, parents, faculty and trustees of the host school
- Offering a potential resource for diversity in the school’s student population.
- Attracting excellent teachers committed to diversity within both the Horizons program and the host school
- Expanding the school’s visibility in the giving community
- Providing a place where the alumni of both the host school and Horizons can work
The relationship between Horizons and the independent host school is vital to the success and longevity of the program. See Starting a Horizons Program
Please contact the National Office if you are interested in hosting a Horizons program at your school.
Teaching at Horizons
Horizons offers teachers an opportunity to spread their wings and challenge themselves to present material in an experiential format. Many Horizons teachers return year after year, describing the summer program as “the most fun” they have teaching all year! Teachers are recruited from both public and private schools, and are hired by the individual Horizons program’s Executive Director. Please contact the local program directly for information. Affiliates
Becoming a Horizons Student
Each Horizons Affiliate has it own admissions process. Please see Program for general student qualifications, and contact your local Horizons program for information on deadlines and how to apply.
Volunteering
There are many opportunities for volunteering at Horizons. Each Affiliate has its own needs for volunteers and will recruit from its own community. Volunteer positions include: Board members, benefit coordinators, teaching assistants, bus drivers, community event coordinators, swimming instructors and lifeguards, event planners, tutors, and mentors. Contact your local Affiliates.
Supporting Horizons
Horizons programs are supported through a variety of sources. Though the National Office offers seed money for new start-up Horizons programs and special programs and services, Affiliates are generally financially independent of both the National Office and their host school. This means that a large percentage of the time and effort of any Affiliate’s staff and board is devoted to raising funds. If you are interested in supporting a Horizons student, class, program, or event, please contact a local Affiliates or the National Office.
