How to Start a Program
The first step is to meet with representatives of the Horizons National Expansion Team, who typically travel to your school to meet with the Head or other administrators. The next step is to form an Exploratory Committee to investigate all aspects of starting a Horizons program. An ideal Exploratory Committee reports to the Head of school and consists of a few Trustees and administrators, as well as a Horizons “Champion”—a person identified by the Head to lead the process.
The Exploratory Committee reviews materials provided by Horizons National, such as the “Starting a Horizons Program at Our School” brochure, and examples of strategic plans, feasibility studies and projected budgets. Horizons National also supplies a list of contacts so that the Committee may speak with Heads, Board Members, Development Officers, Executive Directors of Horizons affiliate programs.
If possible, Committee members visit a Horizons site in the summer to see a program in action! Should the Committee decide to recommend the Horizons program to your full Board, members of Horizons National staff are available to attend a Board meeting and make a presentation.
Horizons National will support you through the exploratory process and help you deal with any obstacles or issues identified by the Exploratory Committee.
