Horizons at Harley School
The Harley School is an independent school serving the Rochester, New York area. Its campus includes recently renovated and expanded academic facilities, an Olympic size pool, a large field house, and indoor and outdoor tennis courts. Nestled in a charming suburban neighborhood, surrounded by a lovely meandering creek, it is the perfect setting for the Horizons at Harley program. The program began in 1995 with 24 students in first and second grades. In 2011, they served 142 students Kindergarten through eighth grade. This number included 10 kindergarten students from a pilot program through the Monroe Community College. This was the second consecutive summer in which Horizons at Harley piloted a program having hosted an inaugural class for the University of Rochester in 2010.
The summer program is a blend of academic, cultural, and recreational activities designed to be fun and enriching with the purpose of developing and enhancing self-esteem and promoting the value of learning. The program has several measurable goals to assess success and to maintain focus on the Horizons’ mission.
In summer 2011 a number of new offerings included: hospice, college and career, financial literacy, Get Real Science with the University of Rochester, community service projects by all grades, Project Wisdom character development program, yoga, zumba, soccer, lacrosse, and karate. SUNY Geneseo provided 41 graduate level “literacy tutors” who daily worked on improving the reading skills of our most challenged readers. We also gave away over 750 books to participating students.
