Located on the campuses of three independent
schools, Horizons Hampton Roads welcomes a growing number of
students each summer for six weeks of academic reinforcement
and enrichment, swimming instruction, field trips, music and
art. Horizons Hampton Roads was established in the summer of 1999 by a partnership of dedicated
community leaders and educators. Public school students from
selected Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Portsmouth schools who live in
low-income circumstances are eligible to apply to participate in
this unique nine-year investment in learning.
The summer academic program is presented
by a professional teaching staff with a 4:1 student:teacher ratio.
As with all Horizons programs, swimming is an integral part of
every student’s experience.
Art and music classes open a new world to students, and field trips
encourage explorations of new environs. Super Saturday sessions
held during the school year help tie the summers together. These
sessions bring Horizons Hampton Roads students back together for
fun activities designed around a holiday or special event. Sessions
are coordinated by Program Directors and committed volunteers.
Program Directors guide Horizons Hampton
Roads at each school, while our partners; Virginia Beach City
Public Schools, Norfolk Public Schools, and Portsmouth Catholic Elementary School provide students and
a wealth of support. Our two independent schools, Cape Henry
Collegiate School and Norfolk Collegiate School, offer much more
than a facility… they give a wealth
of administrative support and expertise. Increasing numbers of
community partners from commerce, industry, and philanthropy provide
for the critical needs of each program year.
In addition to expansion through annual grade
level growth, the potential exists to add other private school/public
school partnerships in other cities in Hampton Roads. Under the leadership
of a dedicated Board of Directors and a full time Executive Director,
Horizons Hampton Roads’ multi site concept is a first in the
Horizons family.
