 Horizons
at Green Farms Academy is committed to helping the underserved youth of
Bridgeport succeed in school, build confidence, and realize their full
potential. Using the facilities of Greens Farms Academy, Horizons
operates its program during the summer for six weeks and on Saturdays
throughout the school year. Guided by a professional and nurturing
faculty in small group settings, the program emphasizes academics, but
also encompasses cultural enrichment, the arts, technology, swimming
and other activities. The Horizons program provides experiences for
students in Grades K-8 that strengthen academic performance; build
awareness of the outside world; and foster inquisitiveness, creativity,
self-discipline, problem-solving, organizational skills, and a sense of
community responsibility. Retaining the same students year after
year is a priority and we provide transportation and meals at no cost
to participants.

Seven
years ago, Greens Farms Academy was approached to start a Horizons
program to replicate for the Bridgeport Public School audience the
successful model implemented at New Canaan Country School. Twenty-six
students in grades K and 1 joined our first program in the summer of
2000, and we have been growing ever since. We are growing in student
numbers, funding, program depth, and most importantly in the influence
we have on the children we serve.
In August 2006 we proudly
concluded our seventh summer program, with 118 students in grades K-7.
Nearly 85% of the students that started as kindergartners and first
graders in our first summer session are still enrolled in the program.
We will continue to add a new class of kindergarten students each year
until we reach our full capacity of 135 students in grades K-8 in the
summer of 2007. As our program grows, we are brightening the future of
our community!
